SPARTANS NEWS | ISSUE #1 - 25 May 2023

Here is the first instalment in what we hope will be a series of regular, but not overwhelming, updates from the Spartans Gridiron Club about things we are doing, and ways you can get involved or help out our Club.

Australian Sports Foundation Fundraising

We are excited to announce that we have established a fundraising portal on the Australian Sports Foundation website. We have set an ambitious goal of raising $10,000.00 to support our Club in attracting and retaining players at both the Junior and Senior level. Gridiron is a very niche sport in South Australia; we do not receive much exposure in the media and not many people know about the league. Our goal is to grow our membership base by exposing more people who enjoy watching the NFL to playing gridiron. We can do this by advertising the Club on social media and in traditional media and by bringing the Spartans into schools by supporting Flag Football programs in PE Curriculum. We can further support our new and existing members by purchasing uniforms and protective and training equipment, lower costs and making the sport more affordable for all players.

2023 Juniors Season

The 2023 Gridiron SA Juniors season wrapped up last weekend – congratulations to the South City Chiefs who defeated the UniSA Eagles in the Grand Final. Our Spartans Juniors had a fantastic season, here are some of the highlights:

  • We fielded a team of 15 players, which is a dramatic improvement on the 7 we had last season. This meant that we were able to play actual games every week, and not have to play scratch matches with players from other clubs helping us out;

  • We won two games!!! Back-to-back against the UniSA Eagles and the Adelaide University Razorbacks in the later part of the season. Both were fantastic defensive performances, against the Eagles we kept them scoreless, and against the Razorbacks we came from 8-0 points down at half time to win 14-8;

  • We scored in all but two games; and

  • We said farewell and thank you to Coach Joe Kulonja, who has guided the Juniors over a number of years and has left them in a better position than when he took over. Coach Joe plans to keep involved with the Spartans in his role as President. Click HERE to see our Appreciation Post on Facebook, and here’s a photo of our Juniors squad.
